PETALING JAYA: The Human Rights Commission of Malaysia (Suhakam) has criticized Matty Healy, the frontman of British band The 1975, for his controversial remarks against Malaysia’s LGBT laws. Suhakam chairman Datuk Dr Rahmat Mohamad stated that Healy’s actions were disrespectful towards local laws and Malaysian culture.
“While Suhakam advocates equality for all and freedom of expression, these rights must be exercised responsibly and within the limitations set by local laws and cultural considerations,” Dr Rahmat said in a statement on Monday (July 23).
Dr Rahmat emphasized that these restrictions were necessary to maintain national security and public order.
Furthermore, he pointed out that Healy’s behavior had negative consequences on other artists and vendors, causing severe economic impact.
“Over the years, Malaysia has successfully hosted numerous artists who have shown respect for our local laws and cultural norms during their performances,” he added.
Rahmat called upon individuals to express themselves responsibly and avoid engaging in acts of intolerance and hatred, as embracing cultural diversity is crucial for fostering harmony in society.
