The 263rd Meeting of the Conference of Rulers was held at Istana Negara on Friday (Oct 27) and was chaired by the Sultan of Terengganu, Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin. The purpose of the meeting was to elect the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong and the Timbalan (Deputy) Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Except for Kelantan and Perlis, all Malay Rulers including the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, attended the special meeting which started at 10.10am.
The Malay Rulers present at the meeting were the Sultan of Johor, Sultan Ibrahim Almarhum Sultan Iskandar; Sultan of Selangor Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah; Sultan of Perak Sultan Nazrin Shah; Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Ibni Almarhum Tuanku Munawir; and Sultan of Kedah Sultan Sallehuddin Sultan Badlishah.
Prior to the meeting, the Malay Rulers took a group photograph. The election process and meeting concluded an hour later. The Keeper of the Rulers’ Seal is expected to announce the election results in the evening.
This special meeting was necessary as the current Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Sultan Abdullah, will finish his term on Jan 30 next year. He ascended the federal throne on Jan 31, 2019, after being elected during a special meeting on Jan 24 of the same year. – Bernama
