GEORGE TOWN: A suspected gas leak caused an explosion at a restaurant on Campbell Street here on Saturday (Aug 3).

A Penang Fire and Rescue Department spokesman, however, said there were no casualties in the early morning incident.

“Firefighters from the Lebuh Pantai fire station were deployed to the scene after the department received a distress call from the public at 5.32am,” he added.

The spokesman said firemen also conducted checks in the vicinity to ensure the surrounding area was safe.

He said the case has been handed over to the police for further investigation.

It is learnt that the blast caused the kitchen roof and an iron door at the front of the shop to be blown off.

The incident has received the attention of Tanjong MP Lim Hui Ying, whose service centre team members visited the premises on Saturday.

Also present were Komtar and Padang Kota service centre team members, as well as several Penang Island City Council councillors.
