Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has called for those with the Tun title to be investigated and for their property to be seized if they are unable to explain the source of their wealth. He stated that “suspicion” alone should be enough to warrant investigation, without the need to obtain evidence of any misdeeds.
In a Facebook post, Dr. Mahathir emphasized the need to eradicate corruption at all levels. He also stated that even a first-time offender should face the full force of the law if the country truly follows the rule of law.
Furthermore, Dr. Mahathir emphasized that it is the right of the Attorney General (AG) to decide whether to continue prosecution and return passports if the accusations are deemed to be politically motivated. He maintained that the courts should not question the AG’s decision.
On December 21, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) seized the iconic 60-storey Ilham Tower, owned by the family of former finance minister Tun Daim Zainuddin, after finding an offense under the MACC Act 2009. The tower, located in the prime commercial and residential area around the KLCC, was estimated to cost RM2.7 billion.
According to Channel News Asia, the seizure occurred after Daim refused to submit to MACC’s request to reveal his and his family’s financial holdings. Financial executives close to Daim were quoted as saying that the seizure was the result of his refusal to comply with MACC’s petition.
