The Sarawak state government plans to construct a laboratory in each district to enhance the education of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among young people. Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg stated that this decision was made due to the inadequate condition of school laboratories in the state, and these facilities would be available for use by schools within each district.

“I have observed that schools in Sarawak, with the exception of Science schools, lack well-equipped laboratories. Biology, chemistry, and physics rely on laboratories for effective learning,” said Tan Sri Abang Johari during the Kuching zone Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) special party convention on September 23.

He further emphasized the importance of fully equipped laboratories, stating that the practical application of knowledge differs significantly from textbook learning.

To strengthen STEM education in schools, the state government has also established the Centre for Technology Excellence Sarawak (CENTEXS), aiming to nurture more skilled Sarawakians in the field of STEM.

This initiative seeks to address the current limitations in laboratory facilities and promote a hands-on approach to learning scientific subjects, which is crucial for a comprehensive education.

By providing well-equipped laboratories in each district, students in Sarawak will have increased opportunities for practical experimentation and observation in the fields of biology, chemistry, and physics.

Through practical experience, students can develop a deeper understanding of scientific concepts and theories, ultimately improving their overall scientific literacy and problem-solving abilities.

In addition, the state government’s establishment of CENTEXS demonstrates their commitment to producing more skilled individuals in STEM, contributing to the development of Sarawak’s technological sector and enhancing its global competitiveness.

This move also aligns with the global focus on STEM education and the increasing demand for professionals in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics fields.

Overall, the Sarawak state government’s decision to build laboratories in each district signifies their dedication to improving STEM education and preparing the youth for future careers in science and technology.
