The Member of Parliament (MP) for Muar, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, has announced that he will join the opposition bloc in the Dewan Rakyat starting from Tuesday (Sept 12). This decision comes after withdrawing his support for the Unity Government. Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul has confirmed receiving a letter from Syed Saddiq, who is also the president of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda), requesting a change in his seating arrangement in the House. Johari assured reporters that he has instructed the administration staff to relocate Syed Saddiq’s seat to the opposition area within the Parliament building on Monday (Sept 11).
Syed Saddiq made the declaration on Sunday (Sept 10) stating that he no longer supports the government and intends to become the third political force. The Dewan Rakyat is currently conducting a special six-day sitting primarily focusing on the 12th Malaysia Plan Mid-Term Review (12MP MTR) presented by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim on Monday. As per the Parliament calendar, Members of Parliament will engage in debates regarding the 12MP MTR for three days starting from Tuesday. This will be followed by the concerned ministries providing their replies on September 18 and 19.
In another development, Speaker Johari had a courtesy meeting with the Speaker of the National Assembly of South Korea, Kim Jin-pyo. They discussed matters related to technological cooperation. Johari extended an invitation to Kim Jin-pyo to consider collaboration from the ASEAN perspective, as Malaysia is set to chair the 2025 conference. They explored opportunities for developing the region using South Korea’s technology and Malaysia’s resources and manpower. Additionally, Kim Jin-pyo attended the ongoing special Dewan Rakyat sitting and held discussions with Senate President Tan Sri Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar.
