KOTA KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) president Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili has described late Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud, the former Chief Minister of Sarawak, as an influential figure who played a major role in the state’s progress and development during his 33-year tenure. He extended his party’s condolences to the family of the former Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sarawak on Wednesday (Feb 21), highlighting Taib’s title as the ‘Father of Modern Sarawak’ due to his contributions.
Additionally, Ongkili acknowledged working with Taib’s youngest daughter, Datuk Hanifah Taib, who previously held the position of Deputy Minister at the Prime Minister’s Department (Sabah and Sarawak Affairs).
He further emphasized that Taib’s leadership not only helped Sarawak overcome various challenges and transitions but also guided the state to achieve unity, harmony, and stability, despite its religious and racial diversities. Ongkili also expressed that Taib’s legacy will be eternally remembered, and he wished for his soul to rest in peace.
Meanwhile, former Sabah Chief Minister Tan Sri Musa Aman also offered his condolences, highlighting the close relationship he shared with Taib as neighboring state leaders in the past. Musa lauded Taib as a highly experienced and focused leader who dedicated his energy towards the development of Sarawak. He mentioned that Taib’s passing isn’t just a loss for the people of Sarawak but for the entire nation, citing Taib’s significant contributions to progress and unity in Sarawak.
