Transport Minister Anthony Loke has urged local airlines to address the issue of flight shortages to popular destinations during peak seasons.
Loke commended Batik Air’s decision to add an extra flight to Sibu from the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) during the Chinese New Year period.
The extra flight to Sibu will run from February 6th to 9th. Loke also highlighted that ticket fares were capped at RM399, which he praised as a step towards stabilizing flight prices.
He encouraged other airlines to follow Batik Air’s example and take steps to stabilize flight ticket prices, especially during peak seasons, for the benefit of the people.
Loke made these comments after a sending-off ceremony for passengers of Batik Air’s new flight, where they were treated to a lion dance at the terminal before boarding the plane.
He also announced the Transport Ministry’s plan to increase road enforcement to address the issue of overloaded vehicles that pose a danger to other motorists and damage roads.
Loke also provided an update on the proposed merger between the Malaysian Aviation Commission (Mavcom) and the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM). He expects the bill to be tabled in the second session of Parliament later this year.
Parliament’s second session is anticipated to begin on June 24th and conclude on July 18th, with the third session scheduled to last from October to December.
