KUALA LUMPUR: Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan has questioned the silence of DAP leaders regarding the outcome of Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s graft case. Ahmad Zahid was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal. Takiyuddin pointed out that former Iskandar Puteri MP Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng (YB Bagan), Gobind Singh Deo (YB Damanasara), and others who had previously spoken about justice to defend the rakyat were now silent on the matter. Takiyuddin expressed his concern during the debate on the 12th Malaysia Plan in Parliament on Sept 12.
The case has attracted the attention of foreign media, which described it as having a negative impact on the nation and the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
On Sept 4, Ahmad Zahid was granted a discharge not amounting to acquittal for 47 graft charges related to Yayasan Akalbudi funds. The decision has led to criticism of former attorney general Tan Sri Idrus Harun, who will be summoned to a Parliamentary Special Select Committee to explain the decision.
During the debate, Opposition leader Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin (PN-Larut) expressed the desire for the issue of Ahmad Zahid’s discharge not amounting to acquittal to be discussed in Parliament. He highlighted the public’s perception that external influences may have influenced the decision.
PN-Machang representative Wan Ahmad Fayshal Wan Ahmad Kamal also called on the Attorney-General to share with Parliament a list of corruption cases that have been withdrawn, in order to inform the public.
