KOTA KINABALU: MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong described the launch of the Tunku Abdul Rahman University of Management and Technology’s (TAR UMT) campus in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah as a “significant milestone” for the institution. TAR UMT has been providing quality education in Sabah for the past 22 years, with its student population growing from just 22 in 2002 to over 500 currently.
Dr Wee highlighted the expansion of programs at the Sabah campus, noting that from only four programs at the diploma and certificate levels in 2002, prospective students can now choose from three undergraduate and eight diploma programs.
The MCA president attended the official launch of the new campus in Kota Kinabalu, alongside Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor who officiated the event. Hajiji stated that the opening of the campus aligns with Sabah’s goal of developing a quality human capital pool.
He also commended TAR UMT’s “Beyond Education” philosophy, which focuses on academic excellence, essential competencies, and civic values in students, describing it as holistic and empowering.
Dr Wee agreed with Hajiji, emphasizing that the establishment of the campus is in accordance with Sabah’s plans in the Sabah Development Corridor and Sabah Structural Plan 2033 to prepare a skilled workforce for the state’s further development.
Expressing gratitude, the TAR Education Foundation chairman thanked the Sabah government for its continuous support, which has facilitated the growth of TAR UMT over the years. He also mentioned the Sabah Education Foundation established in 2022, through which 12 TAR UMT Sabah students have received financial aid.
As the chairman of the Board of Trustees of TAR Education Foundation, Dr Wee conveyed his appreciation to the Sabah government for its unwavering assistance.
