KUALA LUMPUR: Rafizi Ramli stated that targeted subsidies for petrol and diesel are expected to be implemented in 2024 using three different mechanisms. Rafizi, the Economy Minister, revealed in the Dewan Rakyat that the first mechanism will consider individual net disposable income. The second mechanism will be based on net disposable household income through social protection or assistance schemes. The third mechanism will involve a combination of household and individual earnings, and a subsidies card will be utilized.
Rafizi mentioned that the targeted subsidies program is projected to be launched after the implementation of the Central Database Hub (Padu) system in January next year. He also emphasized that the exact details and plans for the implementation and follow-up of the targeted subsidies will be decided by the Cabinet. This includes communication, engagement, and support plans that aim to alleviate the burden of the people, which will be coordinated by the entire government machinery.
His remarks were in response to a question regarding engagement with stakeholders on targeted subsidies in 2024 and the specific type of targeted subsidies that will be implemented. On November 3, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim clarified that the re-targeting of diesel subsidies will only occur in the peninsula and not in Sabah and Sarawak due to the extensive use of diesel in those states.
