Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized that the government’s new targeted subsidy programme is designed to ensure that assistance reaches the right group of Malaysians. The Prime Minister defended the move, stating that targeted subsidies are necessary to prevent foreigners and the wealthy from taking advantage of subsidies.
He explained that a similar approach is taken with electricity bills, where tariff hikes only affect 15% of the population, namely the affluent individuals. Anwar mentioned, “The aim is to direct subsidies to 85% of the population, which can help boost their purchasing power and alleviate financial burdens.”
Speaking at a buka puasa event at Felda Chuping, Anwar highlighted that oil prices have remained stable due to factors such as global market dynamics, geopolitical issues, and production costs.
He acknowledged the promise to lower oil prices in Malaysia but emphasized the importance of carefully analyzing any proposed changes.
Anwar pointed out that subsidizing petrol and diesel benefits Malaysian citizens as well as around 3.5 million to four million foreigners.
He stressed the need for effective targeting of subsidies, suggesting a reevaluation of distribution methods to prioritize assistance for those in need while minimizing benefits for wealthier individuals and foreign nationals.
