Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and Star Media Group (SMG) have partnered to create an educational programme in Malaysia that aims to raise awareness about climate change without causing eco-anxiety among school children. The programme, called “Powering the Future,” promotes energy safety and efficiency while nurturing future climate change activists. TNB and SMG have rolled out workshops in selected urban and sub-urban primary and secondary schools in the Klang Valley, which include simulation activities and games to engage students. Their objective is to foster awareness of renewable energy and promote sustainable change.
The workshops aim to provide students with a deeper understanding of the energy sector, including the current energy generation process and the need to transition to renewable energy sources. TNB expects around 800 students to participate and hopes that the campaign will help them understand the interconnected nature of United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). Through these workshops, TNB also aims to broaden children’s knowledge of optimal energy consumption and reduce reliance on fossil fuels to lower greenhouse gas emissions.
The main objective of the workshops is to foster an awareness of renewable energy among students from a young age and encourage sustainable change. TNB also wants to promote electricity efficiency and safety and highlight its commitment to environmental sustainability and the Energy Transition (ET) agenda. The workshops are expected to inspire younger generations and communities to strive for a more sustainable future and adopt energy-efficient lifestyles.
The programme also encourages participating students to become sustainable energy ambassadors. TNB hopes that the students will continue to practice what they have learned and share their knowledge with family members, friends, and neighbors. This sharing of knowledge can help raise awareness about energy waste avoidance and encourage the adoption of energy-efficient practices at home.
The Powering The Future series is part of the Malaysia Energy Literacy Programme (MELP) launched by Natural Resources, Environment and Climate Change Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad. MELP aims to enhance public understanding of the energy sector, the importance of transitioning to renewable energy sources, and the role of environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles in achieving global sustainability.
