KOTA KINABALU: A 14-year-old girl is currently the subject of a search and rescue (SAR) operation after she went missing and is feared to have drowned near Kota Belud on Monday (Aug 28).

The girl, identified as Qiezlle Uyiko, was reportedly swept away by strong currents while she was swimming with her family members at the river adjacent to Daradaat View in Kampung Ratau at approximately 2.30pm.

“The Kota Belud Fire Station has dispatched a team to the area and is receiving assistance from the police and officers from the Health Ministry,” stated a spokesperson from the Fire and Rescue Department.

The spokesperson added that the search operation is being conducted in two locations: one within a 50-meter radius from where the victim was last seen and another along a 4-kilometer stretch of the riverbank.

“Updates regarding any new information will be provided periodically,” the spokesperson affirmed.
