PETALING JAYA: Popular singer Baby Shima has surprised her fans by announcing that she will contest in the upcoming state polls on Aug 12.

Without mentioning which state or constituency she was eyeing, the 30-year-old said she would run as an independent candidate.

“I will announce soon which areas I will be working in and what my manifesto for the people will be,” she said when contacted by mStar.

Baby Shima expressed her determination to serve the people, particularly the youth, and emulate other artists who have ventured into politics.

She also said she was aware her decision would draw criticism but this would not deter her and believed that many would support her cause.

She asserted that she only wanted the people to benefit and was ready to face any backlash coming her way.

“I can’t stop if someone wants to criticise me. All I want to do is help the community.

“There will be cynics but there will also be those who will support my good intentions… everything is for the people,” she said.

Other celebrities who had also contested in the 15th General Election include Datuk Seri Eizlan Yusof, Dr Ahmad Idham, Azlan Sani Zawawi (Lando) as well as producer/director Datuk Jurey Rosli.
