Tragedy struck in Dungun when a 16-year-old boy drowned while swimming with friends near Pantai Rantau Abang in a swampy area.
The victim, Muhammad Hazrie Ezani Abdullah, was a student at SMK Kompleks Rantau Abang. Dungun Fire and Rescue Station chief Sharizal Shamsudin reported that his body was found at a depth of four meters at 6:10 pm on Friday.
The water rescue team located the victim using the surface search method and handed over his body to the police for further action.
According to Sharizal, the fire department received a call at 5:13 pm informing them that the teenager had been swept away by the current while swimming with friends near Pantai Rantau Abang. This prompted 22 firemen from Dungun BBP, Chukai Fire Station, and Kuala Terengganu Fire Station to rush to the scene along with four brigades for a search and rescue operation.
Sharizal also cautioned the public to refrain from water activities in high-risk areas temporarily, especially due to the ongoing north-east monsoon season. – Bernama
