The Communications and Digital Ministry of Malaysia aims to resolve the issue of “naked” telecommunication towers in Sarawak by the end of this month. Minister Fahmi Fadzil stated that a few details still need to be finalized before these towers can be equipped with telecommunications equipment. He expressed optimism that there would be positive news regarding this matter in the near future. Fahmi clarified that the solution would involve telecommunication service providers, not Starlink. While Starlink provides Internet connectivity, teleco towers are responsible for providing cellular connectivity for phone calls.
Datuk Julaihi Narawi, Sarawak’s Utility and Telecommunications Minister, welcomed any financial allocations to equip teleco towers in the region. He explained that the construction of these towers involves multiple stages, beginning with the physical structure’s construction, followed by the installation of telecommunications equipment. Each of these stages takes approximately nine months. Furthermore, the towers need to be energized with electricity supply to be fully functional and operational.
