PETALING JAYA: Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri’ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has called for a transparent probe into the case involving syndicates running illegal electronic waste (ewaste) processing factories worth millions of ringgit.
The Tengku Mahkota of Pahang thanked and congratulated the police, led by the IGP Secretariat’s Anti-Money Laundering (Amla) division head Comm Datuk Muhammed Hasbullah, for successfully carrying out an operation against unlicensed e-waste processing factories, especially in Salong, Pekan, and Bukim Ibam, Muadzam Shah, Pahang.
“The Tengku Mahkota of Pahang also expressed full support for the police to intensify and continue operations to eradicate illegal activities in Pahang,” he said in a statement on Wednesday (Aug 14).
Police on Tuesday (Aug 13) arrested 55 people, including a man with a Datuk title, for allegedly running illegal ewaste processing operations in several states, based on a tip-off from the Pahang royalty.
The Datuk, who is Malaysian, along with nine other locals and 45 foreigners aged between 30 and 50, were nabbed in raids conducted in Pahang, Johor, Selangor, and Negri Sembilan on Aug 5.
In Pahang, the police received a tip-off on the illegal factories from Tengku Mahkota Pahang. The tip-off, which followed public concern about such illegal activities in Pahang, led to seven unlicensed factories being raided last week.
Tengku Hassanal also called on other enforcement agencies, such as the Pahang enforcement unit, state forestry department, environment department, and local authorities, to continuously increase enforcement activities in a more firm manner to curb such environmental criminal activities.
The Tengku Mahkota Pahang also urged all parties to uphold the decree made by the Sultan of Pahang to protect the environment, including flora and fauna, as well as water resources in the state.
