KUALA TERENGGANU: Terengganu police have denied allegations that the “Ops Khas Motosikal” operation conducted on Friday and Saturday (Sept 8 and 9) was intended to sabotage the RXZ Members 5.0 annual gathering, which took place in Kuala Nerus near here.
Datuk Mazli Mazlan, the state police chief, stated that the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Road Transport Department (JPJ) following numerous complaints by the public about the behavior of a few motorcyclists, who not only rode recklessly but also disrupted public order.
He emphasized that the operation was a routine task performed by the police in order to ensure public safety, and there were no political motivations, as claimed by certain parties.
“After receiving complaints, the police conducted surveillance and discovered that there were violations of the law by some of the RXZ Members 5.0 participants, who were riding recklessly to the extent of endangering other road users, including on highways and state roads,” he explained.
Comm Mazli said that the police always supports any program or activity that has a positive impact on the socio-economics of the population, as long as it does not violate existing laws.
“There is no issue with the organizers as they had obtained a permit from the police. It’s just a few motorcyclists who took advantage of the event to misbehave,” he added.
There has been dissatisfaction expressed by internet users on social media after a few participants were arrested by the police and the Road Transport Department (JPJ), with their motorcycles being seized.
Some posts on social media attributed the actions taken by the authorities as being instructed from those “higher up” since the event was held in an Opposition state.
Comm Mazli stated that a total of 185 motorcycles were impounded and 292 summonses were issued during the two-day operation, which covered the Kuala Nerus and Kuala Terengganu districts.
“Throughout the two-day operation, a total of 73 accident cases were reported, with four of them being fatal accidents involving RXZ Members 5.0 participants,” he revealed.
Meanwhile, in a separate press conference, Zulkarnain Yasin, the Terengganu JPJ director, stated that 134 offenses were recorded, and out of the 40,000 participants, only 1.34% were arrested for breaking the law.
“All actions were taken to protect the safety of other road users and the public,” he concluded. – Bernama
