KUALA TERENGGANU: An employee of a local authority in Terengganu has been arrested by the Terengganu Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for allegedly abusing power. The arrest is related to the employee’s approval of the withdrawal of the agency’s union welfare fund for personal use.
According to a source, the suspect, who is in his 50s and also the treasurer of the union, committed the act from 2017 to 2020. The employee is believed to have conducted more than 30 transactions amounting to almost RM200,000.
The arrest took place at about 12.30pm on Monday (Aug 14) at the state MACC office where the suspect appeared to provide a statement. The MACC is expected to bring the suspect to a Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday (Aug 15) to obtain a remand order, as confirmed by state MACC director Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid.
Hazrul Shazreen Abd Yazid further clarified that the case is being investigated under Section 23 (1) of the MACC Act 2009.
