KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu office of the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) disposed of contraband cigarettes with a total value of RM1.2mil on Sunday (Sept 10). A total of 379,400 cigarettes of various brands were confiscated during raids conducted throughout the state last April.
To dispose of the contraband, a grinding machine was used and the resulting waste was taken to the Kuala Terengganu City Council Sungai Ikan landfill in Kuala Nerus.
MMEA Terengganu director, Maritime Captain Mohd Khairulanuar Abd Majid, stated that disposal witnessing officers were present during the process.
Mohd Khairulanuar also mentioned that the MMEA will continue monitoring and curbing the smuggling activities of cigarettes, as the demand for them remains high in the community, particularly in the East coast region. This comes amid a rise in the frequency of such activities.
