KUALA TERENGGANU: The Terengganu state government is optimistic about reaching its goal of attracting 300,000 tourists to Tasik Kenyir by the end of this year.
Datuk Razali Idris, chairman of the State Tourism, Culture, Environment and Climate Change Committee, stated that as of July, a total of 141,487 tourists had visited Tasik Kenyir.
Addressing the State Legislative Assembly sitting at Wisma Darul Iman on Wednesday (Oct 4), Razali said, “Despite the impending monsoon season, we can still achieve the target as Tasik Kenyir is a popular spot, particularly among anglers.”
This statement was given in response to a question posed by Mohd Zawawi Ismail (PAS-Telemong), who inquired about the total number of visitors to Tasik Kenyir and the measures taken by the state government to boost tourism.
Razali explained that there had been a significant decline in tourist arrivals at Tasik Kenyir, from 607,398 in 2019 to 208,097 in 2020.
However, the number of tourists rose to 277,969 in 2021 before dropping again to 246,896 in 2022, he added.
“The sharp decline was attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic. Nonetheless, with the implementation of various events in the area, we are confident that the tourism sector in Kenyir will recover to its previous robust level,” Razali said, according to Bernama.
