PETALING JAYA: Tesla, the renowned electric car manufacturer, is making plans to establish its Malaysian headquarters in Selangor this year, according to Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. During a 25-minute virtual meeting with Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, Anwar expressed his support for Tesla’s investment in Malaysia and even mentioned Musk’s plan to visit the country. Anwar stated, “I congratulated him and expressed the government’s support for the setting up of Tesla’s office as well as its experience and service centres in Selangor this year.” The meeting was also attended by SpaceX senior director Lauren Dreyer, Minister of Investment, Trade, and Industry Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, and Communications and Digital Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
In addition to discussing Tesla’s plans, Anwar and Musk also covered SpaceX’s Starlink satellite broadband service, which has the potential to significantly improve the nation’s internet connectivity, particularly in rural areas that lack adequate infrastructure. Anwar emphasized the positive impact this initiative could have on education, agricultural technology, and income generation. Starlink, created by SpaceX, is already available in 32 countries.
Back in March, Tengku Zafrul announced Tesla’s intention to establish its base in Malaysia, encompassing an experience and supercharger network facility, as well as a service center. This undertaking by Tesla is expected to create numerous skilled employment opportunities for locals.
