On March 6, a Thai man was apprehended by the Royal Malaysian Customs Department at the International Arrival Hall of the Langkawi Ferry Terminal. The 42-year-old individual was found in possession of 14,000 methamphetamine pills during the bust.
Nor Izah Abd Latiff, the director of Kedah Customs, explained that the man was behaving suspiciously when a team of Customs officers from the Langkawi Narcotics Enforcement Branch decided to detain him at around 2.30pm. Upon inspection, they discovered a blue package containing 11,600 methamphetamine pills weighing 1,102 grams. In addition, 2,400 pills weighing 228 grams were found in the man’s black waist bag.
The total seizure amounted to 14,000 pills with a combined weight of 1,330 grams, estimated to have a value of RM210,000,” she disclosed in a statement in Alor Setar on March 12.
The suspect’s approach involved passing through the Customs inspection area without any luggage, only carrying and holding packages of goods intended for personal use.
Further investigations via a urine test confirmed the man had traces of methamphetamine in his system, indicating his involvement in drug-related activities.
He is currently under a seven-day remand until March 13 for further inquiries under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The public is encouraged to report any smuggling activities to the Customs toll-free line at 1-800-88-8855 or the nearest Customs Office. – Bernama
