The chairman of Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, expressed appreciation for Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) decision not to nominate a candidate for the Jepak state by-election. Abang Johari believes this decision sends a message that GPS is the best candidate to defend the rights of Sarawakians. He also expressed gratitude to PN (Perikatan Nasional) for not nominating a candidate either. He emphasized that Sarawak can only be effectively governed by Sarawakians themselves, and he hopes that their future will be brighter when they defend Sarawak’s current political system.
Abang Johari made these remarks during the “Town hall with the Sarawak Premier” session held as part of the 2023 ‘Lan Berambeh Anak Sarawak” program at the Malaysian International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC) on October 21.
The Jepak by-election is taking place due to the death of the incumbent Datuk Talib Zulpilip on September 15. The three-cornered fight will be between GPS candidate Iskandar Turkee, Parti Bumi Kenyalang (PBK)’s Stevenson Joseph Sumbang, and Parti Aspirasi Rakyat Sarawak (Aspirasi)’s Chieng Lea Phing.
Responding to concerns about the shortage of teachers in Sarawak, Abang Johari stated that the state government is working with the Education Ministry to address the issue. They are focused on training Sarawakians to become teachers in local schools. Collaboration with Swinburne University of Technology, which is recognized by the Malaysian Education Ministry, is part of this effort.
In addition to addressing the teacher shortage, Sarawak is also currently preparing for the possibility of hosting the 2027 SEA Games. Abang Johari mentioned that construction and upgrades of sports facilities are underway to ensure the event’s success and compliance with international standards.
“We have been informed to be prepared, in case we are asked by the Youth and Sports Ministry to be the host for the 2027 Sea Games,” he said. – Bernama
