There is much to learn from Japan's 5G and ETC systems, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong believes that there are valuable lessons to be learned from Japan’s 5G and Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) systems. The president of the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) says that during a visit to Japan, he and a delegation held meetings with Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTT) to study their 5G systems. Dr Wee said that this interaction with NTT provided insights into optimal strategies for developing the telecommunications sector’s 5G systems and an understanding of NTT Docomo’s approach to planning and implementing 5G development in Japan. According to Dr Wee, this knowledge is especially timely for Malaysia, which is still in the early stages of its own 5G development.

In addition to learning about 5G, the Malaysian delegation was briefed by East Nippon Expressway Co. Ltd (NEXCO East) on highway technologies aimed at alleviating traffic congestion. Notably, NEXCO East discussed the Electronic Toll Collection (ETC) system, which permits seamless wireless toll collection using a vehicle’s debit, credit, or ETC card. This technology eliminates the need for vehicles to stop at tolls, greatly reducing congestion.

The delegation, led by Tanjong Manis MP Yusuf Abd Wahab, also includes Klang MP V. Ganabatirau and Wangsa Maju MP Zahir Hassan. Their visit to Japan demonstrates the Malaysian government’s commitment to exploring successful overseas models to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure and transportation systems.
