KLUANG: There is an element of trust among the Chinese community towards Perikatan Nasional, says Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
The Bersatu supreme council member said the Chinese community has been warm and receptive towards Perikatan, as seen during the campaigning activities for the Mahkota by-election here.
“They have been greeting us with big smiles and were receptive when we handed out our candidate’s brochures,” said Azmin, who is also the coalition’s by-election director.
“The Kluang Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry even invited Perikatan chairman Tan Sri Muhyuddin Yassin for a dialogue with the business community, where a memorandum highlighting their concerns related to infrastructure, connectivity and economic activities was handed over.
“These incidents showed that there is a trust among the community towards Perikatan and I hope that will be translated into votes when polling day comes this Saturday (Sept 28),” he told reporters after hosting a media lunch here on Wednesday (Sept 25).
Asked whether the spat between Umno Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh and DAP’s Teresa Kok would help Perikatan in its campaign for Mahkota, Azmin said his coalition does not want to rely on the weakness of others.
“We have to work hard because I do not want us to rely on their internal issues to win the by-election.
“What is going on within their camp is their problem. I do not want to get involved,” he added.
He was referring to the halal certification issue that started after Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Dr Mohd Na’im Mokhtar proposed for halal certification to be mandatory for eateries that do not serve pork and alcohol.
At present, halal certification is voluntary.
