Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has emphasized that there should be no double standards in addressing conflicts and advocating for human rights, especially in the case of Palestinians. He expressed this sentiment during the 43rd Asean Summit, where he met with all the dialogue partners and urged them to reject Islamophobia. Anwar pointed out that while these leaders oppose the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, they remain silent concerning the rights of Palestinians. He reiterated his strong support for the rights of Palestinians based on human rights and the values of humanity. Anwar also shared this message with United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres and plans to convey it to the world body.
World leaders, including Anwar and delegates, will convene at the United Nations headquarters in New York in September to discuss pressing issues. Anwar stated that Saudi Arabia would take a similar initiative to support the rights of Palestinians during the United Nations General Assembly, and he directed Wisma Putra to provide full support on the matter. He further announced that together with the Turkish government, they would organize a meeting in New York to raise awareness about racial extremism and prejudice against any religion, particularly Islamophobia.
As for reviewing the Five Point Consensus (5PC) aimed at achieving peace and stability in Myanmar, Anwar stated that there was still a consensus not to review the matter. While he acknowledged the possibility of discussing other initiatives with Myanmar, he affirmed that they would be subject to the principles within the 5PC. Anwar stressed the importance of maintaining the concept of centrality and neutrality, despite differing opinions.
Regarding Malaysia’s chairmanship in 2025 after Laos, Anwar mentioned that it would be discussed in the next Cabinet meeting. This preparation would involve the Foreign Ministry, International Trade and Industry Ministry (Miti), and the Prime Minister’s Department. Anwar emphasized that this responsibility extends beyond ASEAN and will require Malaysia to perform at its best due to Indonesia’s successful hosting of the summit.
On Thursday (Sept 7), Indonesia officially handed over its rotating ASEAN chairmanship to Laos, who will host the 2024 summit. Subsequently, Laos will pass the baton to Malaysia to serve as the group’s chair in 2025.
