KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) warns that the actions of a few individuals can damage Malaysia’s reputation as a tourist-friendly destination. Nigel Wong, the president of MATTA, explains that those who demand payment at tourist spots and offer illegal tours give the impression that Malaysia is not welcoming to tourists. This is because these individuals operate outside the established regulations and guidelines set by various agencies. When tourists realize they have been deceived, they will spread negative opinions about Malaysia. Wong believes that this can discourage potential visitors and harm the local tourism industry.
To avoid this potential outcome, Wong calls for a crackdown on illegal operators in order to protect Malaysia’s reputation. He argues that lenient actions against these operators will only encourage more illegal businesses. Rather, strict enforcement and severe punishment must be prioritized. Wong urges the authorities to promptly investigate and take the necessary action against such practices.
Tiong King Sing, the Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, vows to address the issue of tourists being cheated and scammed. He plans to send his officials to the field to investigate and will invite the police to conduct a joint investigation as well.
One of the incidents that has raised concern is a viral video showing a large group of people loitering near the PETRONAS Twin Towers and demanding payment for photography services from tourists. In Penang, there have also been reports of foreigners conducting illegal tours.
