Five suspects, including three immigration officers, were arrested in Johor Baru for allegedly assisting in the illegal entry of foreigners. The arrests took place between 5pm and 11pm on Tuesday at the Johor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office and the Larkin area.
A team from the Johor Immigration Department’s Integrity Division discovered the possible involvement of its officers in the illegal activity during regular checks at Senai International Airport. The officers’ phones were examined, revealing text messages that indicated bribes were being offered and accepted by the suspects.
According to a source, the inducements were from foreigners seeking to enter Malaysia without following proper procedures, with the help of the implicated officers. The wife of one officer was also among those arrested.
The suspects, whose ages range from 35 to 46, appeared in court on Wednesday morning for a remand order. Senior assistant registrar Nurkhalida Farhana Abu Bakar granted a five-day remand order for all five individuals.
Johor MACC director Datuk Azmi Alias confirmed the arrests and stated that the case is under investigation according to Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
