Three military personnel from the 3rd Batallion of Perak’s Pengkalan Hulu Border Regiment were killed in a tragic accident on the North-South Expressway near Gurun, Kedah. The soldiers were hit by a lorry as they were getting out of their vehicles after a breakdown.
The lorry driver also sustained serious injuries in the collision, which involved three military lorries on the northbound lane at KM77.5. Guar Chempedak Fire and Rescue station chief Assistant Fire Supt Mohd Fauzi Razali confirmed that all three soldiers, aged 30 to 40, were pronounced dead at the scene by Health Ministry officials.
According to Mohd Fauzi Razali, the military lorries were traveling in a convoy and had to stop due to a breakdown. As the soldiers were disembarking from their trucks, the 31-year-old lorry driver lost control, causing the collision that resulted in the soldiers’ deaths.
The fire station received an emergency call at 10:22am and dispatched a team of firefighters along with six others from the Pendang fire station to the scene of the incident. The lorry driver was taken to Hospital Sultanah Bahiyah for further treatment, while the bodies of the three soldiers were sent to the hospital’s forensic unit for a post-mortem examination.
