KOTA TINGGI: A tragic accident occurred at KM56.7 along Jalan Kota Tinggi-Kluang involving a Singapore-registered multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a lorry, resulting in the death of three passengers.
Kota Tinggi OCPD Supt Hussin Zamora stated that the incident took place near the Cenah palm oil plantation in Bandar Tenggara on Monday (August 28) at approximately 1.35pm.
According to Supt Hussin, initial investigations at the scene revealed that the Singapore-registered Honda Freed MPV was traveling from Kluang to Bandar Tenggara, while the lorry was moving from Bandar Tenggara to Kluang.
“The incident occurred as the Singapore MPV attempted to overtake a lorry ahead but collided head-on with an oncoming lorry from the opposite direction,” he explained.
As a result of the impact, three women aged between 56 and 61 years, including two Singaporeans and a Malaysian with permanent residency in Singapore, lost their lives at the scene.
Supt Hussin added that the 59-year-old Singaporean male driver and the 49-year-old lorry driver were both transported by ambulances to Kota Tinggi Hospital and Kluang Hospital for medical treatment.
“The victims’ families have already identified their bodies, and the police will facilitate the handing over of the remains as soon as possible,” he mentioned, while also noting that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act.
The deceased have been identified as Toh Poh Kian, 56, as well as Soon Moh Tan and Wong Lan Yew, both aged 61. The surviving individuals are Ong Cheow Lam, 59, and Ahmad Zani Karimon, 49.
