THE new Labis National Registration Department (NRD) in Johor has received the thumbs up for its spacious facilities that are also friendly to those with special needs.

Rosli Hussin, who brought his wheelchair-bound mother to get a new birth certificate, was impressed with the new facility, which is equipped with a ramp.

“It is so much more convenient to wheel my 80-year-old mother into the building and move around from counter to counter,” said the 62-year-old retiree.

“At the old NRD office, my mother could not walk upstairs due to her condition, and had to wait on the ground floor for the department personnel to come down to attend to her.

“The ample parking space at this new location is also a plus for me to load and unload her wheelchair into the car.”

Construction worker Ng Boon Leong, 45, said he did not know that the NRD office had moved to a new location until his wife told him.

“I work in Singapore and returned home to replace my MyKad.

“It only took about 15 minutes to complete the application process. I am impressed with the service,” he added.

Bekok assemblyman Tan Chong said the new Labis NRD office, located along Jalan Pejabat, was opened on July 30.

The new office has a marriage registration room, changing room, and breastfeeding room, with plans to make it more inclusive.

“I have visited the new office and surrounding area, and feedback from the public so far has been positive.

“It is definitely more convenient for them, especially those with special needs.

“The old office was located on the second floor of Bangunan Pejabat Kerajaan, so it was a big challenge for some people to go up and down the stairs,” said Tan.

He added that many people were still unaware that the Labis NRD office had moved and urged the department to ensure the public would be made aware of the new location.
