As National Day approaches, Malaysians are taking the time to reflect on the meaning of Merdeka and express their gratitude for their country. S. Jeevan, 53, and J. Shanthi, 48, recall how their parents taught them about the end of British rule and the significance of independence. Jeevan, a chief insurance agency manager at Penang Shirdi Sai Baba Centre, explains that independence represents the freedom and right to self-govern. They now pass on this knowledge to their children. The centre recently organized an early Merdeka celebration, distributing Jalur Gemilang flags to people in the area. Shanthi highlights the importance of being reminded of the blessings Malaysians enjoy by always having the flags at home and the office. For them, Merdeka Day is a time for thanksgiving and celebration.
29-year-old C. Pavithiraa, who was out shopping with her five-year-old nephew G. Thamil, believes it’s important to educate the young ones about National Day. She explains to Thamil that it’s the nation’s birthday, which is why they display flags. Although she’s unsure how much he understands, Thamil enjoys waving the flag. As part of the celebrations, the Shirdi Sai Baba Centre treated the public to free ais kacang and entertained them with a classical fusion dance and lunch. Datuk S.P. Kannan, the chairman of the Shirdi Sai Baba Society of Malaysia, reveals that they distributed 5,000 Jalur Gemilang at their 17 branches nationwide as they do every year. In addition to this, the centres offer free meals daily to the community.
Lim Siew Khim, chairman of Penang’s social development, welfare, and non-Islamic religious affairs committee, had the honor of being the guest of honor at the event. Before joining the centre’s celebration, she walked around Little India to distribute flags. She expresses a sense of pride when unfurling the Jalur Gemilang, acknowledging that it symbolizes not only freedom but also deep affection for their homeland. Lim was accompanied by representatives from Penang Shirdi Sai Baba Centre during the flag distribution.
