Speaking at the 68th Anniversary of the Independence Declaration of the Federation of Malaya celebration at the Proclamation of Independence Memorial in Banda Hilir on Tuesday (Feb 20), Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim advised today’s leaders against emulating the avaricious and arrogant behavior of the officers of the countries that once colonized Malaysia.
The PM stressed that current leaders must seek to learn from the good and positive characteristics of the past leaders who pledged their lives and property to achieve independence for the nation, without falling into the trap of avarice and arrogance.
Accompanying the PM at the celebration were the Yang Dipertua Negeri of Melaka, Tun Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh and Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing.
Anwar also urged the next generation to strive to elevate the country’s dignity to a higher level, develop the economy, ensure quality of education and health, and attract tourists and industries to improve the lives of the people.
He emphasized that it’s important to remember that the country’s Constitution, while giving privileges to the Malays, does not exclude other races who also fought for independence together. The Constitution intends to recognize all as legitimate citizens who jointly fought for independence, without belittling or degrading anyone.
Overall, Anwar’s speech highlighted the importance of learning from the past, striving for the nation’s progress, and recognizing the contributions of all races towards Malaysia’s independence. His message encourages leaders and citizens alike to work together for the betterment of the nation.
