According to reports, a three-storey logistics complex in Bayan Lepas, George Town collapsed late at night while Bangladeshis were working on the first floor. The collapse resulted in the deaths of three workers and injuries to two others. The injured men are currently receiving treatment at the Penang Hospital Orthopaedic and Surgery Department.
Penang Fire and Rescue Department deputy director Zulfahmi Sutaji stated that the men were working about 18 meters above ground level when the structure collapsed. The rescue operation became complicated as firemen attempted to cut through hardened concrete to free the trapped men, who had actually already left the scene.
Zulfahmi also mentioned that rescue workers faced challenges in moving the 33-tonne beam and other beams linked to it, which had to be carefully handled to avoid further risks.
Mayor of Penang Island City Council (MBPP) Datuk A. Rajendran confirmed that a stop-work order has been issued for the project. He denied claims that the builders were rushing to complete the structure, and highlighted the use of technology and permission to work at night due to the area being outside the residential zone.
It was reported that the project, which was 55% completed, is a joint effort between Titijaya Land Bhd and DHL Supply Chain (M) Sdn to develop the logistics complex in Bayan Lepas. The complex was expected to have various facilities including an office, automatic rack systems, a warehouse, and utilities.
Tijitaya Land Bhd expressed devastation over the incident and stated that they have instructed the contractor to reach out to the families of the victims and provide assistance to those who have been hospitalized. The group managing director also assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted to determine if any human error or negligence contributed to the tragedy.
