    Tough to keep Ipoh clean

    -

Residents voiced their concerns about the recurring dumping issue. A resident from Taman Pakatan, Marcus Pheong, complained about the same spot being repeatedly used as a dumpsite despite multiple clearings by the city council. He emphasized the need for a long-term solution to curb indiscriminate rubbish disposal. Similarly, a retired businesswoman, Mel Lim, expressed her discomfort and fear of rats and snakes due to rubbish heaps near her home in Taman Silibin Ria. She called for increased enforcement and penalties to deter offenders. K. Sagadevan, Vice-Chairman of the Lim Garden Residents Association, acknowledged the significant reduction in dumpsites over the past seven years. However, he mentioned occasional bags of rubbish left by the road despite constant reminders about waste collection schedules. He suggested engaging NGOs and Rukun Tetangga to implement recycling activities in the community. Sagadevan also hoped that contractors hired by MBI to cut grass in the housing area would remove the waste generated during their work. Impacted by the irregular rubbish collection caused by Covid-19 cases among workers in 2020 and 2021, Prof Dr Richard Ng, president of Ipoh City Watch, emphasized the need for enhanced enforcement at hotspots. He suggested installing more CCTV cameras in these areas and engaging NGOs and Rukun Tetangga in recycling initiatives. He also commended the provision of dustbins to households and the increase in enforcement and penalties by MBI, highlighting the steep reduction in illegal dumping in several areas. Ng specifically mentioned the success in stopping illegal dumping in Taman Ipoh Permai, Desa Tambun Indah, Taman Ipoh Perdana, Taman SPPK, Taman Perpaduan in Tambun, Taman Koperasi, and Kanthan. Warning signs with higher fine amounts and surveillance cameras were installed in these areas. Overall, despite the progress made in clearing illegal dumpsites in Ipoh, there is still a need for continuous efforts to combat this issue and foster responsible waste disposal habits among residents.
