The state of Melaka has introduced jet ski rides as a new attraction for tourists, offering rides across the Straits of Malacca to the island of Pulau Besar. Goh Hock Gin, the chairman of the Malaysian Association of Tour and Travel Agents (MATTA) Melaka chapter, stated that the ride takes approximately 30 minutes from Kota Laksamana on the mainland to Pulau Besar. He further mentioned that MATTA is actively promoting this unique water sports experience during their fair held at a shopping mall in Melaka.

During an interview on October 4, Goh highlighted the importance of safety by ensuring a guide is present for novice riders on the jet skis. He also mentioned that MATTA has advised the jet ski operator to respect the taboos and local customs associated with Pulau Besar. Although MATTA is promoting the jet ski adventure, it is the operator’s responsibility to ensure adherence to all aspects, including the dos and don’ts on the island.

Pulau Besar, situated about 15km from the mainland, is renowned for its ancient tombs, shrines, and mausoleums. Currently, tourists can reach the island through ferry services and speed boats. Goh also revealed that during the fair, there will be an introduction to the sunshine cruise tour and island hopping package. Special discounts for these packages will be offered on that day.

The island hopping package aims to highlight the eco-tourism segment of Visit Melaka Year 2024. Pulau Undan, Pulau Nangka, and Pulau Dodol are among the islands covered in the eco-tourism tour package. These three islands, occupying an area approximately one nautical mile off the coast, have been designated as the first national marine park in Melaka. The Fisheries Department’s discovery of 81 species of hard corals and 19 species of colorful soft corals of the Gorgonian type in the area has brought a significant boost to the local tourism industry.

Goh stated that MATTA will actively encourage eco-tourism activities such as diving and snorkeling at these islands.
