Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook has announced plans to introduce the demand responsive transit (DRT) service in the Klang Valley to improve public transportation connectivity.
The initiative, which will focus on first and last-mile areas with limited access to public bus services, will be allocated part of the RM50mil budget for 2024 to enhance public transportation. The funds will be used to purchase vans, with Prasarana tasked to oversee their operations.
Loke explained that the concept is similar to e-hailing services and will be strategically placed in areas without specific bus routes. The Transport Ministry aims to work with companies offering van-on-demand services to expand the initiative.
Additionally, the Ministry plans to present amendments to the Road Transport Act 1987 (Act 33) regarding the offence of driving in bus lanes in the coming year. The changes are aimed at preventing misuse of the lanes by other road users and enhancing their effectiveness.
Under the proposed amendments, enforcement personnel would issue compounds based on offences monitored and recorded on camera, as placing personnel at the lanes was found to be less effective. The Ministry plans to implement smart enforcement using license plate scanning devices in the future.
Loke also stated that the Ministry would continue advocacy efforts to prohibit private vehicles from using bus lanes for a year before issuing compounds for the offence.
