KLANG: The trial run for designated ladies-only coaches for the MRT Kajang Line will start at the end of this month, according to Transport Minister Anthony Loke Siew Fook.
Loke said if the initiative is successful, the ministry will expand the idea to train services on other lines.
“We are introducing women-only coaches in response to the increasing cases of sexual harassment on trains,” he told reporters at the DAP Women National Congress in Klang on Saturday (Sept 9).
He mentioned that during rush hour, women often have to ride on overcrowded trains and may experience physical contact, which is the reason behind implementing this initiative.
Each coach can accommodate more than 100 female commuters at a time, Loke added.
The Transport Ministry previously announced on media that it plans to introduce ladies-only coaches on the MRT Kajang line to create a more comfortable and secure environment for women commuters.
Keretapi Tanah Melayu Bhd’s Komuter already introduced pink coaches for their female commuters on April 28, 2010, as 60% of the total ridership consists of women.
Additionally, Loke mentioned that the preliminary report of the fatal air crash near Shah Alam will be released on Sept 15.
The Beechcraft 390 Premier 1 aircraft crashed onto the Guthrie Highway at around 2.50pm on August 17, killing all eight people on board, including Pahang state executive councillor Datuk Seri Johari Harun, as well as two road users. – Bernama
