On Saturday (March 23), 12 locations in Sibu will participate in Earth Hour by turning off their lights at 8.30pm for an hour. Earth Hour is a global movement that encourages people to take action on environmental issues and protect the planet.
The 12 locations include the Sibu Gateway, street lighting along Jalan Kampung Nyabor, Taman Ling, Sibu Central Market, Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) Public Library, Dataran Tun Tuanku Bujang Phase I, and Rajang Port Authority, among others.
SMC chairman Clarence Ting mentioned that SMC started following the Earth Hour programme in 2010, and other local authorities in Sarawak have since joined in. He added that this year, Miri City Council will lead the initiative, with SMC and others participating virtually.
Those interested can watch the live broadcast on the Sibu Municipal Council chairman’s Facebook page from 7.30pm. Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian will be the guest of honour at the event.
Ting encouraged the public to take part in Earth Hour, stressing the importance of conserving energy and protecting the environment. He emphasized that this campaign is for anyone dedicated to making the planet a better place for both current and future generations.
He also urged parents to involve their children in the initiative to increase awareness about environmental conservation. Ting mentioned that they will request electricity usage data from Sarawak Energy to monitor the impact of the programme.
