JOHOR BARU: An elderly couple in Johor Baru arrived early at the polling stations at SK Seri Melati due to concerns about heavy traffic. Chu Koi Wa, 76, left his house in Taman University, Skudai, at 7am and arrived at the polling centre within 30 minutes. He mentioned that the usual route to the city tends to be congested, especially on weekends, but fortunately, today it was easier to navigate. Chu and his wife, Tan Yok Eng, 73, used to live nearby but did not change their address.
41-year-old beautician, Hasnini Mohd Rudi, also had a similar plan to vote early to ensure she could open her shop in the city centre on time. She expressed her concern about potential congestion near the polling centre due to its proximity to the city. Hasnini added that in comparison to the previous state elections, the situation was not as hectic during this by-election.
When asked about her hopes for the candidate, Hasnini stated that she wanted Johor to have a capable leader who could effectively fulfill their duties for the people. Earlier, Election Commission (EC) chairman, Tan Sri Abdul Ghani Salleh, revealed that there are a total of 166,653 registered voters in Pulai and 40,379 in Simpang Jeram.
Both constituencies will witness a three-cornered fight involving Pakatan Harapan, Perikatan Nasional, and an Independent candidate. In Pulai, there are 47 polling centres with 294 streams, while Simpang Jeram has 14 centres with 68 streams. The polling centres will be open from 8am to 6pm.
