Two men associated with the notorious “Geng Jiva” were brought before the Sessions Court and charged with participating in a series of armed robberies in several areas of Ipoh.

34-year-old wireman K. Gunasegaran and 35-year-old car wash worker K. Kaliswaran, both from Taman Ipoh Timur, pleaded not guilty to the charges read out in Tamil by an interpreter before judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad on November 9.

Gunasegaran, hailing from Kampung Baru Buntong, was accused of 10 charges, including breaking into a house to commit burglary, gang robbery, causing hurt during a robbery, and possessing weapons. The charges were filed under various sections of the Penal Code, Corrosive and Explosive Substances, and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

The alleged crimes took place between June 18 last year and October 18 this year, occurring in various locations such as residential houses and roadside areas.

Kaliswaran was jointly charged with Gunasegaran for committing armed gang robbery using a weapon at a house in Regat Mansion on October 18 at about 10:30am, during which they reportedly stole gold jewellery, cash, mobile phones, and a watch.

Both accused were represented by lawyer Dayang Nor Emilia Azman Shah, while DPP Mohamad Nazreen Zabarudin prosecuted the case.

Dayang Nor Emilia requested lower bail, citing Kaliswaran’s marital status with two children and Gunasegaran’s single status, while Mohamad Nazreen requested bail to be set at RM10,000 for each charge. Ainul Shahrin fixed bail at RM5,000 for each charge for each accused and set January 9 for mention.

On October 26, Ipoh OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Hassan had disclosed that police had apprehended four people, including a woman, suspected of being involved in a series of armed gang robberies. He mentioned that the suspects, aged between 26 and 35, were arrested during a raid at a house in Taman Syabas on October 24 at about 5:45pm.
