KOTA KINABALU: Three suspected members of an international drug syndicate, including two brothers, were apprehended after they were discovered in possession of 50.25kg of syabu, which has an estimated street value of RM3mil. The arrests took place along the arrival hall at Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) on September 7th at approximately 12.40pm. The three suspects, who are between the ages of 27 and 38 and are all locals, were stopped by police from the state Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department due to suspicions of their involvement in drug trafficking.
Sabah police commissioner, Datuk Jauteh Dikun, stated that one of the suspects attempted to flee upon realizing the presence of the police but was promptly arrested. When the police inspected the vehicle, they discovered 50 packages hidden behind the rear passenger seat that were believed to contain methamphetamine or syabu. Comm Jauteh provided these details during a press conference at the state police headquarters in Kepayan on Monday, September 11th.
The initial investigation suggests that the seized drugs were transported from Sarawak by road and were destined for the local market, as well as neighboring countries. The suspects had recently arrived in Kota Kinabalu and were en route to Tawau on the east coast. Comm Jauteh elaborated, “The three suspects are from Sarawak, and it is believed that they are involved in drug trafficking activities from Sarawak to Tawau, as well as to foreign markets.”
Additionally, one of the suspects tested positive for drugs and had prior records related to narcotics. Alongside the drugs, the police confiscated various currencies totaling RM1,902 (including Brunei dollars, Thai baht, Chinese yuan, US dollars, and ringgit), as well as mobile phones and jewelry worth RM15,475. The authorities are further examining the suspects’ bank accounts and other assets that may be subject to seizure under the law.
The three suspects have been remanded until Thursday, September 14th, and the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
