Kepala Batas: Two fishermen were apprehended by the police on Saturday (Sept 9) in Kuala Bekah, Penaga for possession of 20.748 kilograms (kg) of syabu with an estimated value of RM660,000. Seberang Perai Utara district police chief ACP Mohd Asri Shafie stated that the police acted on information and intelligence to arrest the two suspects, aged 42 and 50, who were discovered inside a Toyota Harrier near the fishing jetty at 7pm. Upon inspection, police discovered 20 Chinese tea packages in a bag, which were found to contain the syabu stash.

Mohd Asri added that preliminary investigations reveal the duo intended to smuggle the drugs to Indonesia via the Kuala Bekah fishing jetty. Their plan consisted of taking the syabu supply from Kuala Lumpur and transporting it using a fishing boat to hand it over to an Indonesian syndicate once they reached international waters. To avoid detection, the suspects preferred to transport the drugs at night. Each suspect was paid RM4,000 for every kilogram of syabu shipment.

According to Mohd Asri, the police believe the suspects have connections with both domestic and international drug trafficking syndicates. It was also discovered that they have been actively involved in similar operations since the beginning of this year. The 42-year-old suspect was found to be recently involved, while the other suspect is believed to be the mastermind behind the operation.

During the arrest, both suspects tested positive for drugs. They are currently under remand until September 15 for further investigation under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. In addition to the arrests, the police also seized a car and a fishing boat valued at RM200,000.
