KOTA KINABALU: A mechanic died after he lost control of his car, hit a pipeline and landed in a ditch along Jalan Tuaran in Manggatal near here at 5am on Sunday (June 23).

The victim, in his 20s, was trapped in his car and pronounced dead at the scene, said Kota Kinabalu city police chief Asst Comm Kasim Muda.

A woman passenger in the vehicle was seriously injured and sent to Queen Elizabeth Hospital for treatment, he added.

A Fire and Rescue Department operations centre spokesman said firefighters took about an hour to free the trapped victims.

In a separate accident, a motorcyclist was killed and his pillion rider seriously injured in a collision with a four-wheel drive (4WD) at Bukit Barasanon along the Keningau-Sook road on Saturday (June 22) night.

In the 11.40pm incident, the motorcyclist – a 20-year-old Indonesian – was confirmed to have died at the scene from serious injuries.

The 21-year-old pillion rider suffered serious injuries and was sent to Hospital Keningau.

Four people aged between 30 and 40 who were in the 4WD sustained minor injuries and were given first aid at the scene, Keningau fire station chief Sharudy Delamin said.

He said in a statement that the victim’s body was handed over to police and taken to the hospital for a post-mortem.
