In Kelantan, a tragic incident occurred as a two-month-old baby boy lost his life to pertussis, commonly known as whooping cough. State local government, housing, health and environment committee chairman Hilmi Abdullah shared that the baby’s death was reported in Tanah Merah back in February.
This year, Kelantan has seen a total of 29 cases of whooping cough, with various regions affected including Kota Bharu (11 cases), Tanah Merah (seven), Kuala Krai (four), Pasir Puteh (three), Tumpat (two) and Gua Musang (two).
The seriousness of the situation was further underscored by the occurrence of three outbreaks in different parts of Kelantan, specifically in Tanah Merah, Pasir Puteh, and the most recent one in Kota Bharu on March 14, at a flat in Kubang Kerian,” stated Hilmi Abdullah on Wednesday.
Concerningly, “Of the 29 cases reported, 22 cases, making up 76 per cent of the total, involved babies between the ages of one and five months,” he added.- Bernama
