GEORGE TOWN: Police in Penang have successfully conducted a drug bust, resulting in the seizure of drugs worth over RM5 million.
The Bukit Aman Narcotic Crime Investigation Department director, Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Kamarudin Md Din, announced that two male suspects, aged 42 and 46, were apprehended following two raids in the northeast district. The operations took place on August 15 and 16.
These arrests were instrumental in leading the police to a condominium in Tanjung Tokong, which is believed to have been used as a drug processing lab for heroin.
Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Kamarudin reported that 65.38kg of heroin base, 13.62kg of heroin, and 8.48g of caffeine powder were seized during the operation. The total value of the drugs was estimated to be around RM5.78 million.
Furthermore, it was discovered that the drugs had been smuggled in from Thailand and subsequently processed for distribution within the country.
Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Kamarudin stated, “The syndicate responsible for this drug operation has likely been active since the beginning of this year.”
During a press conference held at the state contingent police headquarters in Penang Road on Friday (August 18), it was revealed that the case is now being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952. The suspects have been remanded for a period of seven days.
Comm Datuk Seri Mohd Kamarudin further disclosed that both suspects have tested negative for drugs and do not possess any criminal records.
Additionally, an MPV worth RM70,000 was seized during the operation.
