PETALING JAYA: An ultrasound gel is being recalled due to safety risks, according to the Medical Device Authority (MDA).

Its chief executive, Dr Muralitharan Paramasua, said in a statement on Tuesday (July 23) that the gel with the serial number USG402-2306 from MyMedic Innovation Sdn Bhd has been recalled following contamination findings from Burkholderia cepacia complex (BCC) bacteria.

“The source of the BCC contamination has not yet been identified, and the company is conducting a thorough investigation to determine it and is taking the necessary corrective actions,” he said.

“This contamination can cause serious infections, especially when the gel comes into contact with bare skin, wounds, or mucous membranes. This poses risks to individuals with low immune systems or chronic conditions.”

“Following this recall order, all users must stop using the product and return it for disposal by the company,” he added, noting that the company had issued a list of affected users.
