In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings: Asia for 2024, Universiti Malaya (UM) continues to be the top university in Malaysia, maintaining its position in the top 20 by ranking 11th.

While UM has dropped two places from last year, it still holds a top-20 status in the region due to its high recognition among the world’s academics and employers. The university ranks among Asia’s top 10 for Employer Reputation and top 20 for Academic Reputation.

UM is also recognized for producing Malaysia’s most impactful research and is the third-most international research institution in Asia.

In second place in Malaysia is Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), which has improved from 27 to 25, followed by Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM), which has also improved its position from 30 to 28.

UPM is ranked 11th in Asia for research, supported by Malaysia’s highest staff expertise, according to the Staff with PhD indicator, placing 21st regionally.

Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Teknologi Malaysia are the other research universities in Malaysia. USM has dropped three spots to 35, while Universiti Teknologi Malaysia moved up two ranks to 37.

On the other hand, Taylor’s University is Malaysia’s highest-ranking private institution on the list and has the highest teaching capacity in Malaysia. It has achieved a score of 92/100 in the Faculty per Student Ratio, positioning it among Asia’s top 50 and making it the only local institution to do so.

With 41 Malaysian universities making it into the rankings, Malaysia has one of the most international student cohorts in Asia, which indicates that it is an attractive study destination.

Additionally, the list includes five new universities that have made it to the ranking for the first time, and 41.5% of Malaysia’s universities have moved up the rankings, making it the second most improved location among those with 10 or more universities ranked.

QS senior vice-president Ben Sowter commented on Malaysia’s higher education system, stating that its expansion and internationalization are key for the country’s evolution into a high-income, knowledge-based economy. He also mentioned that with the strategic investments and policy reforms made by the government, including significant allocations in Budget 2023 and a comprehensive overhaul of the TVET system, Malaysia is on the path to attract global talent and bolster its intellectual resources.

China’s Peking University maintains its position as the top university in the region, followed by the University of Hong Kong and the National University of Singapore. The 15th edition of the rankings features 857 institutions from 25 countries and territories, with 149 ranking for the first time.
